  • B46071 – The Beatles Related Framed Abbey Road Crossing Fragments (UK)

    £2,950.00

A framed display of remnants of the world-famous pedestrian crossing, comprising a square piece of tarmac with white line and a square metal road stud in frame with several photographs of the crossing undergoing replacement.  In 1994 Abbey Road was resurfaced and the zebra crossing made famous by the Beatles on their 1969 album Abbey Road, was destroyed. The fragments offered here were salvaged by the vendor from the original crossing which had a row of metal studs set into the tarmac on either side. The workmen allowed the vendor to keep these fragments and it was later confirmed by the council that the road had not been resurfaced since the 1960s.

Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the original recipient that reads ‘ Re: material recovered from the Abbey Road crossing made famous by The Beatles album.

In 1994 I was driving down Abbey Road from my home in Kilburn. I was shocked to find that the road was being resurfaced using heavy machinery, and the crossing, made famous by The Beatles album, was in the process of being destroyed. The workmen gave me permission to remove some fragments. They had no idea of the iconic landmark they were destroying. The metal road stud is one from a line which ran down either side of the crossing. The replacement crossing did not have metal road studs. The other fragments are tarmac salvaged from the original crossing itself. I took the photographs at the time when the crossing was in the process of being removed. The council later confirmed that the road had not been resurfaced since the 1960s’.

The frame measures 46cm x 55cm (18.1 inches x 21.6 inches). The condition is excellent.
