About this item

A petition and covering letter which was put together by members of the Cavern Club who were fans of the group The Mindbenders. The determined fans petitioned Bob Wooler at the Cavern Club as they had not seen the Mindbenders perform there in a considerable time. Not only did they manage to obtain a total of 428 signatures but they also persuaded the Rolling Stones to sign the petition! It seems that the Cavern members had intended that the petition was to be ongoing but Bob Wooler intervened and announced that after a long break The Mindbenders would be appearing soon at the Cavern so the fans hurriedly wrote the covering letter and handed the petition to Bob. The nine page petition has also been signed by Earl Preston, Kris Ryan, Jud Landen (The Hideaways), Denny Flynn (a friend of The Rolling Stones) and Jimmy Tarbuck. The letter is dated October 1964 and reads, “Dear Bob, We hadn’t seen the Mindbenders at the Cavern for ages + thought it about time we did; so we started a petition + found that 428 people agreed with us. But you announced on Thursday that the boys were appearing here soon + we realised that our petition was now worthless. However we are still giving it to you as we just couldn’t bear to feel that our work was all for nothing. As well as Cavern regulars some famous people have signed + if you look through this you will find the signatures of the following: – The Stones, Earl Preston, Kris Ryan, Jud Landen (Hideaways), (Denny Flyn). P.S. We didn’t forge the Stones signatures. We asked them to sign and they did. From Barbara Carnforth, Linda Hughes, Pat Allen – faithful Mindbenders + Stones fans”.

Each page measures 20cm x 25.5cm (8 inches x 10 inches).  The condition of the Rolling Stones autographs is excellent.  There is some creasing and tape stains, each page has a pinhole in the upper right corner.  The condition of the letter and petition sheets is very good.

The letter is from the collection of the Cavern Club compère Bob Wooler.  Bob was a pivotal figure in the Merseyside music scene of the early sixties.  He introduced The Beatles countless times during their 292 appearances at The Cavern and was a great ambassador for the group.
