An invitation to an early performance by David Bowie’s first band, The Konrads which took place at Highcroft Hall Country Club in Crockenhill, Kent on 5th April 1963. The invitation has handwritten details of the event on the front in blue pen along with details of an upcoming ‘film show’ and ‘motor rally’ written at the bottom. The reverse bears the recipient’s name and address. Bowie was lead singer and played tenor saxophone in The Konrads until he left at the end of December 1963 and joined the King Bees.
Provenance: the invitation is accompanied by a handwritten letter sent to David Bowie by an employee of the club offering him and his family honorary membership. The letter is dated 2nd April 1963 and also comments on David/The Konrad’s performance – “I think you are now putting over your playing & singing very much better than your first appearance here”.
The invitation measures 14cm x 8.5cm (5.5 inches x 3.25 inches). There is some staining to the lower right corner. The condition is very good.
The letter measures 12.5cm x 20.25cm (5 inches x 8 inches). The letter has been folded leaving two horizontal crease lines across the middle and there is some wear to the bottom edge. The condition is very good.
