A UK vinyl pressing of the 1969 Led Zeppelin album ‘Led Zeppelin II’ that has been signed on the gatefold by the group. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant have signed in felt tipped pen, John Bonham and John Paul Jones have signed in blue ballpoint pen. The autographs were obtained at Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Scotland on 17th February 1970.
The album comes with a detailed letter of provenance from the original recipient that reads:-
‘Led Zeppelin Concert Edinburgh February 1970 I was Vice president of the Heriot – Watt University Student Union 1969 -4970. My portfolio was essentially the running of the Student Union facilities in Chambers Steet. During my period of tenure, we embarked on the building of larger Student Union premises with catering facilities in Grindley Street located almost opposite the Usher Hall.
My remit also included the overall responsibility of organising entertainments for the Students Union i.e. music events. We had been limited to hiring local or second ‘tier’ bands mainly due to the capacity of university facilities and were envious of Universities in England that had staged concerts of major artists. We wanted to attract the top groups to Edinburgh, so we approached the local authority who owned the Usher Hall. They were receptive to the proposal of staging a concert.
I contacted a London based agency with a view to booking a headline act and was offered Pink Floyd who were organising a UK tour. I accepted and agreed dates with the Usher Hall. About a week after initialling contracts Pink Floyd cancelled the date as they had accepted an offer to play in the Albert Hall in London. As a replacement I was offered Led Zeppelin. I accepted and agreed the fee of £1300 which seems ridiculous today but remember you could buy 8 (eight) pints of McEwans Export for a pound in 1970.
The concert was a sell out with almost 3000 tickets sold. The concert was brilliant. I had a front row seat but spent a lot of the time preventing students from getting on to the stage.
After the concert I went backstage armed with my two LPs which they all signed’.
Very few fully signed gatefold examples of this album are known to exist.
Some stains on the front cover. The condition of the front is very good minus. The condition of the gatefold is very good plus.
