A pair of notes in the hand of Stephen Stills to the Crosby, Stills and Nash manager, Mac Holbert. Undated but circa 1980s. The first, written in blue ballpoint pen is on a piece of Seelbach Hotel, Louisville, Kentucky note paper, it reads ‘O Dark THIRTY, Mac Was up real late writing regret must pass on museum call when ready for golf course and I’ll get a cab and meet you all there. FOR SURE Stephen’. The second, written in pencil on a piece of yellow notepad paper reads ‘Dear Mac. RE: The Lowenstein Foundation reception: all these negotiations: Any idea why no writes for me? Stills’.

Provenance: the notes come directly from the private collection of Mac Holbert who started in the spring of 1971 as an assistant truck driver and gopher for the Crosby & Nash Tour. In 1973 he became Graham Nash’s assistant and eventually tour manager. He also managed tours for Crosby, Stills Nash, Crosby, Stills, Nash And Young, Poco, America, Dwight Twilley, Peter, Paul And Mary, and Carole King, and did so through 1991. After his retirement from the road, Holbert continued his business relationship with Graham Nash, as well as his friendship with this legendary trio of musicians.

The hotel paper measures 9.1cm x 10.6cm (3.5 inches x 4.15 inches). The condition is excellent.

The notepaper measures 21.5cm x 13.75cm (8.4 inches x 5.4 inches). The condition is very good.
