An interesting four page handwritten letter from John’s uncle Charlie Lennon to Liverpool Echo journalist Peter Trollope. The letter is dated 4/10/82. It describes a visit to Liverpool by Charlie and the circumstances surrounding it. Excerpts from the letter are as follows:
‘..from the moment I attended the Cavern mecca I was taken over for photos and autographs under the statue of John.’
‘…I think everyone worldwide went home with Charles Lennon written on something or other.’
‘I see Pete Best is putting the boot in with the News Of The World. Why did he have to leave all this until my nephews Death?’
‘They were just babes in arms apart from John whom did not no [sic] what home life was all about while his father was away in the Merchant Navy.’
‘John’s mother living it up with other men and that’s what my story is about, not the wonderfull showmanship of Aunt Mimmie [sic].’
The letter comes in a mailing envelope with the words ‘Charles Lennon Peter Trollope Liverpool Echo’ handwritten on the front.
Each page of the letter measures 14cm x 16.5cm (5.5 inches x 6.5 inches). All of the pages have been folded leaving a horizontal crease line across the centre. The condition is very good.
